A United Kingdom Review

A United Kingdom Review by Jon | Dec 1, 2016 | 0 comments A United Kingdom – A Historical Film With an Exceptionally Timely Title It’s a shame that A United Kingdom was released so late in the year, had it come out before June 23rd, 2016 it might have taught some unsuspecting people a few valuable lessons. This biopic covers the courtship and marriage of Seretse Khama, heir to the throne of Bechuanaland and Ruth Williams. The couple faced considerable opposition from their own families, the Labour government of Britain and even interference from South Africa which the British Government was trying...

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them Review

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them Review by Jon | Nov 18, 2016 | 0 comments Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them Potter fans will remember that one of the first textbooks that Hogwarts pupils are asked to buy is called Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them by the fabulously named, Newt Scamander. Rowling wrote the textbook under the name Newt Scamander and it featured margin notes from Harry, Ron and Hermione. It was published in 2001 and the majority of the proceeds went to Comic Relief (between this and Quidditch Through The Ages over £17...

The Giver Blu-ray Review

“I’d probably have loved it when I was eight.” During my discussion with two fellow cinema lovers that’s the comment, they both felt I should use in my review. So there it is, let’s start as we mean to go on. There’s nothing wrong with The Giver that’s easy to put a finger on. A Stellar Cast The cast is excellent. You have Jeff Bridges as the titular Giver, Meryl Streep as the Chief Elder, Katie Holmes as the least scary head of security ever and Alexander Skarsgard as some kind of medical personnel. Then there’re a few youngsters...

Build a Blu-Ray Collection

Build a Blu-Ray Collection by Jon | Nov 14, 2016 | 0 comments Build a Blu-Ray Collection Worthy of Your Shelves Have you ever looked at your ageing collection of DVD’s or (heaven forbid) VHS tapes and wondered if it isn’t time for you to upgrade to buying your favourite films on Blu-ray? Do you own a nice big flat screen TV, perhaps even with a 4K screen and yet use it to display low-quality versions of blockbuster films? Then perhaps it’s time you started to really enjoy your time spent watching films. If you haven’t got at least...

Do I need Blu-ray or a 4K TV?

HD vs 4K and Blu-ray vs 4K Blu-ray We’re strong advocates of balancing cost with quality. If you bought a flat screen TV in the last few years it’s almost certainly HD or above. Likewise, any relatively new optical disc player is almost certainly a Blu-ray device. If you don’t have those things then we have a few suggestions to make but we strongly suggest you do your research before making a purchasing decision. Make sure you know what you’re buying and why, if you get the wrong TV you’re unlikely to replace it soon and you could end up being frustrated for years. The market for new TV’s and the sources that can make the best use of them is constantly changing. Prices for 4K sets and sources are dropping and the variety of options you have available are increasing all the time. What if I don’t need 4K? We don’t think it’s worth investing in any TV less than 4K at this point. However, everyone has different needs, you might just want a small screen for a spare bedroom or kitchen diner. You might have limits of space or budget and that’s fine. Regardless of your reason, you need to know that HD ready means it’s 720p as opposed to Full HD which is 1080p. Please don’t buy anything less than a Full HD TV. The cheapest TV John Lewis...
